The Government introduced a new planning exemption in 2018 that allows the change of use of certain vacant commercial buildings to domestic use without the requirement for planning permission. This will remove existing barriers to the quick conversion of vacant or under utilised city or town centre commercial properties for residential purposes. This exemption will serve the dual purpose of regenerating towns and villages while at the same time providing housing to those in need.
