Council website, initiated on behalf of the local government sector is helping to bring vacant homes back in to use.
VacantHomes.ie is an online platform initiated by Mayo County Council which allows the public to anonymously log empty homes in their areas. Between 250 to 300 vacant homes have already been brought back into use or are currently in the process of being renovated for immediate occupation. Read in full below!
Launched by Mayo County Council, the Vacant Homes.ie website now has nearly 3,000 properties registered.
Leinster has the highest number of empty houses followed by Munster.
“The situation as it currently stands is unsustainable. We need more properties to come on stream and one way this can happen is for owners of vacant properties to release the potential of their empty residence and bring the property back into use” says Tom Gilligan, instigator of the website VacantHomes.ie.

With the recent announcement that just 2,700 properties are available to rent nationwide, Tom Gilligan, Director of Services at Mayo County Council is urging vacant home property owners to take action and help increase the housing supply.
“There is a vacant homes website where people can register properties they think are vacant” Ms Mulholland said.

The Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Damien English, T.D., launched (10th April,2019) a manual to help property owners, the public, local authorities and the construction industry to developing vacant buildings. Bringing Back Homes – Manual for the reuse of existing buildings aims to help increase housing supply as well as rejuvenate town centres and city streets.
Minister Damien English TD launches two new reports on Vacant Properties authored by Dr Philip Crowe. This research was commissioned by the Collaborative Working Group for Housing and Sustainable Living, which includes representatives from The Heritage Council of Ireland, the Housing Agency, Mayo County Council and Space Engagers.
